Well put, Matt.

I'll build on what you're saying and add that the thing that kills cultures is when they get too insular. Opera is a perfect example of this. It's defined itself almost out of existence, while Broadway (and way-off Broadway, e.g. the Klingon Opera that's debuting on Long Island) are thriving.

Of course, the flip side is that it is possible to become too inclusive. "World Music" is a perfect example. Apparently that includes everything that *isn't* a Klingon Opera.

(Yeah, I'm still amazed that there is a Klingon Opera. It kind of shows.)

Well said, Matt. I think you and Wil have both echoed much of my sentiment regarding the whole "I Am a Geek" fiasco. That being said, I think this further feeds into my pet peeve du jour, which is this ridiculous line that's been drawn between the words "nerd" and "geek." I've got a post on that coming up myself, so I'll not bore you with the details, but suffice it to say I feel the terms are now being used divisively even by our own people. And that's a damn shame.
